Sharon Seeks Europe's Support, But Finds Skepticism

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is making his first trip as prime minister to Europe, where he is seeking support for his country's policies toward the Palestinians. His first stop was in Germany, for a meeting with Chancellor1 Gerhard Schroeder and then he went on to Paris.
Following evening talks with French President Jacques Chirac, Mr. Sharon told reporters he believes France could help bring 1)stability to the Middle East.
Mr. Sharon described his 2)conversation with the French president as interesting and 3)passionate. The two leaders were to continue their talks during the evening, at a dinner hosted by Mr. Chirac. Friday morning, Mr. Sharon also meets with Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, before leaving Paris.
Mr. Sharon's visit here comes a day after Israel announced it would resume strikes against Palestinian militants2, a 4)tactic that has drawn3 condemnation4 both from Europe and from the United States. Earlier in Germany, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder urged Mr. Sharon to adopt a more flexible 5)stance toward finding peace with the Palestinians, particularly on the issue of Jewish settlements.
And in France, the Agence France-Presse news agency reported that President Chirac warned Mr. Sharon that 6)weakening the position of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat would be 7)counterproductive to peace. France is also expected to criticize continued Israeli settlement-building in the 8)occupied territories.
For his part, Mr. Sharon has called for a more balanced European stance on the Middle East. He also told a news conference in Germany that he is ready for painful 9)compromises for real peace.
Traditionally, a number of European leaders have expressed 10)sympathy for Palestinian 11)grievances. Indeed, during peace talks last October in Paris, former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak accused Mr. Chirac of hardening Mr. Arafat's position.
Just a few kilometers from the Elysee Palace, where the French and Israeli leaders held talks, hundreds of demonstrators marched in the streets of Paris, carrying pro-Palestinian banners under the watchful5 eye of riot police. Many shouted, "Sharon, murderer!", referring to 12)allegations associating Mr. Sharon with the 1982 massacre6 by right-wing Lebanese militiamen of Palestinians in Lebanese 13)refugee camps. Mr. Sharon was Israel's defense7 minister at the time.
One of the demonstrators, Mohammed Izrehani, a Frenchman of North African origin, called Mr. Sharon a war 14)criminal. He also called Mr. Sharon a 15)racist.
In June, survivors8 of the 1982 16)massacre lodged9 a complaint against Mr. Sharon in a Belgian court. The Israeli Prime Minister was to visit Brussels as part of this trip, but he canceled that leg of the journey, 17)reportedly due to lack of time.
