英语词汇：content正误用法例析

误：Before buying a book, I look at the table of content.

正：Before buying a book, I look at the table of contents.

析：content 用作名词，表示“目录”，总是用复数形式，即使用于名词前作定语也是如此，如：the contents page(目录页)。另外，表示“内容”时，若表示抽象意义的“内容”(如表示 题材、要旨等方面的意思时)，通常不可数的；但若表示具体 的“内容”或指具体“所装的东西”，则通常要用复数形式。如：Empty out the contents of your purse.(把你钱包里的东西都倒出来)。

◆他这个人从不满足。

误：He takes contents in nothing.

正：He takes content in nothing.

析：content 用作名词，表示“满足”，是不可数的，不能用数形式。

◆我们不满足于目前的成就。

误：We are not content at the present achievements.

正：We are not content with the present achievements.

析：content 用作形容词，表示“满意的”，通常只用作表语，要 表示“对……满意”，其后通常接介词 with，又如：Are youcontent with your work?(你对你的工作满意吗?)，有时还可 接不定式，表示乐意做某事，如：I should be well content to do so.(我很乐意这样做)。

◆他面带满意的笑容拿走了它。

误：He took it away with a content smile.

正：He took it away with a contented¹ smile.

析：content 用作形容词，表示“满意的”，只用作表语，不用作定语，要在此义上用作定语，须用 contented。

◆什么也不能使他满足。

误：Nothing could content with him.

正：Nothing could content him.

析：content 用作动词，是及物动词，其意为“使满足”或“使满意”，其后不能用介词 with。但是若表示用某物满足某人，则可以在其宾语后用介词 with，如：The baby contentedhimself with a new toy.(那婴儿有新玩具就心满意足了)。
