India’s lower house of parliament has passed a much awaited anti-rape1 law. It comes after a huge public outcry over the treatment of women in the country, triggered by the rape and murder of a student in New Delhi.

The "Criminal Laws Bill" includes
stringent2 punishments for rape and other sexual crimes. Rapists will be given up to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of death sentences in extreme cases.
