Brazil can concentrate on next year’s World Cup and then the Olympics in 3 years time. Who will host the next edition of the Summer Games after Rio though, has yet to be determined1.
It will be either Istanbul, Madrid or Tokyo and all three cities are getting set to make their final presentations to the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday. This will be the final chance to sway opinion ahead of the final vote in September. We get more now from Peter Koveos.
The importance of these presentations could not be understated, if any of the three bid cities could change the minds of any voters it would have to happen on this day. Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid all have technically2 solid bids -- and right now it is difficult to say which city has the inside track to host the games.
"It’s a very important meeting because it is a meeting where the IOC members ask very precise questions to the big cities, go in depth in different files and get the necessary feedback. But also for the big cities it is important to evaluate their presentation and to find unity3 for the final decision." Jacques Rogge, IOC President said.
All three cities have pros4 and cons5 --- Istanbul, which straddles Europe and Asia, is seeking to take the Olympics to a predominantly Muslim country for the first time -- but they would also require the most spending and infrastructure6.
Tokyo claims to have a $4.5 billion reserve fund - money in the bank - for financing Olympic construction -- but they are also including existing venues7 in its bid from when it hosted the 1964 Games -- which may not meet modern standards.
Madrid could face a dilemma8 because of the country’s economic woes9 -- a recession for most of the past four years and has a 27.2 percent unemployment rate, which could mean that they may not have the wherewithal to stage the games, but some would argue it could be the impetus10 to stimulate11 the economy. As you can see each is flawed.
"The Evaluation12 Commission said that each one of the three cities could stage a perfect Games but more important that each one of the three has put the athletes at the centre of their preoccupation, the centre of their care and for me this is very important because we (the IOC) organise13 Games for the athletes." Jacques Rogge said.
After this presentation, the cities will be hard pressed to influence the IOC members, as they will select the host city by secret ballot14 on Sept. 7 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
