(单词翻译)

Historians have revealed hard evidence thatthe settlers in the American colony at James Town, Virginia resorted to cannibalism1 to survivethe harsh winter of 1609. Researchers said damages to the skull2 of a14-year-old girl they named Jane show signs that she was dismembered theneaten. An account by one of the settlers recalled how they were forced to eattheir horses, dogs and cats in order to survive the harsh conditions.Researchers said Jane was probably not the only case of cannibalism.

How many of the growing members of the dead were cannibalized is unknown, butwe don’t believe Jane was a lone3 case. Only in the most desperate circumstanceswould the English have turned to cannibalism.
