US shoppers have raced for bargains in a two-day buying marathon that began when more than a dozen major retailers1 opened on Thanksgiving holiday.
About 15 thousand people waited for the flagship Macy’s in New York City’s Herald2 Square when it opened at 8 pm. Across the country, the frenzy3 continued overnight and through the morning of Black Friday, which until recently had been considered the official start of the holiday shopping season and the biggest shopping day of the year.
Retailers have pushed opening times into Thanksgiving night and moved to discounting in early November. But some workers’ rights groups planned protests on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday because they oppose shop employees having to miss family meals at home.
