November 11th, known in China as "Singles’ Day", is the busiest online shopping day of the year thanks to massive discounts being offered. Let’s look back now at some of the sales figures for the shopping frenzy1 that took place this year.
Consumers clicked their way to a record 116 million yuan in purchases in the first minute of the day, on the shopping platform T-mall. Within 24 hours, transactions soared to a staggering total of 35 billion yuan. The figure was nearly double that of last year. 180 million parcels were sent overall, with 60 million sent that very day.
The November 11th shopping craze began in 2009, when 27 merchants on T-mall offered big discounts to perk2 up sales in the previously3 quiet time of year.
