A Russian scholar says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine1 is a grave provocation2 to regional peace.
Alexander Larin, researcher at Russian Academy of Sciences, says the visit will deeply hurt the feelings of those countries victimized by Japan’s war crimes during the Second World War.
He also points out that after Abe assumed power, right-wing nationalism continues to rise in Japan together with Japan’s past wartime militarism, which has fuelled regional tension.
"The situation is worsening in East Asia. Japan’s past militarism is rising and expanding fast. It’s the beginning of Japan’s military politics or the resurgence3 of wartime militarism in the country," Larin said.
"For Russia, it’s very important to see a peaceful and stable environment for development in Asia, especially in East Asia. Just like the principles that the Chinese leaders have put forward and adhere to, only a win-win situation of mutual4 benefits can guarantee regional stability and world peace and dissolve all conflicts through dialogues."
