Japanese Defence Minister, Itsunori Onodera, arrived in India on Monday where he is expected to seal a deal to sell Japan’s used military aircraft.
Onodera was received by his Indian counterpart and is expected to meet top political and military leaders from India. According to local media reports, he will also discuss regional security issues and ways to strengthen bilateral1 military ties between the two countries including holding joint2 exercises. He is also expected to push the sale of Japan’s amphibious aircraft to the Indian Armed Forces.
Weapon exports are strictly3 prohibited by Japan’s pacifist law, but analysts4 suspect Japan will attempt to evade5 the rule by removing the enemy identification system on the planes, which would classify them as civilian6 aircraft.
