Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has played down talk of a military coup1 in the country, ahead of a planned "shutdown" of the capital next week by protesters.
Yingluck said on Friday that military intervention2 would not help the country and that was really not what democracy was about. Yingluck said that the government is able to control the protests.
Thai senior officials also said the government is prepared, and life would go on much as normal. The government has planned to deploy3 over 20,000 police to the capital to maintain order. Pro-government protesters also planned mass rallies around the capital on Sunday against the shutdown.
