Chinese diplomats1 continue to express outrage2 over Japanese Prime minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to the Yasukuni war shrine3 last month. Shi Mingde, Chinese ambassador to Germany is the latest to condemn4 the visit.
In an interview with a German newspaper, he said the dispute between China and Japan arises from their attitude towards history. China will not compromise on matters of principle. He said Abe’s visit to Yasukuni is like a German chancellor5 laying a wreath at Hitler’s bunker, rather than visiting a memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. This would be unthinkable in Germany. He called on Japan to learn from Germany, and face up to history. Only by doing that, can Japan achieve reconciliation6 and restore relations with its Asian neighbours.
