Afghan presidential hopeful, Abdullah Abdullah, has called for transparency and fairness in the country’s election process. His comments come after Afghanistan’s election commission delayed a planned release of full results to allow for vote recounts and audits1 and announced only the latest partial results.
Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah talks during an interview
with media at his residence in Kabul on April 24, 2014.
"One hundred thousand votes, which were announced as void or cancelled, those will be recounted back in Kabul and our demand is that the recounting and auditing2 in Kabul should be fully3 transparent4, so there are no further questions about the conduct of the Elections Complaints Commissions." Abdullah said.
The latest partial election results released Thursday show front-runner Abdullah still leading. So far, Abdullah, a former foreign minister, has 43.8 percent of the vote. His closest rival, ex-Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, has 32.9 percent.
The results are based on 82.6 percent of the more than seven million votes cast in the April 5th election. Full preliminary results are expected to be announced on Saturday. They are due to be finalised on May 14th after investigations5 into fraud claims are completed. If no candidate gets a majority, a run-off will be required.
