Anti-government protesters in Thailand have marched on various locations in the capital Bangkok. This comes as the beginning of a promised "final battle" to oust2 the caretaker government and usher3 in reform before an election.
The long-lasting political stalemate in Thailand is seemingly coming to an end, with a victory for the opposition4. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was forced to step down on Thursday, after a constitutional court found her guilty of abuse of power. But the opposition, which celebrated5 the decision, have said it is not enough.
Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban called the new caretaker Prime Minister a puppet, and asked the interim6 cabinet to hand power back to the people. Thousands of Thai protesters on Friday launched what they called a "final battle" to topple the government.
Meanwhile, Yingluck’s supporters, known as the Red Shirts, have called for a huge rally on Saturday in Bangkok, to protest against the constitutional court ruling and call for an election.
"We will dispatch two thousand people on Saturday to join the other Red Shirts in Bangkok. We are going to protest against the delay of the election. The Red Shirts need an election." said Worawut Roojanapinan, Leader, Red-Shirt Group Rak Chiang Mai 51.
This call to protest has sparked fears of possible clashes between pro1 and anti government demonstrators. Analysts7 believe Yingluck’s stepping down, which protesters demanded for 6 months, has further widened the country’s sharp political divide.
