A new round of high-level negotiations1 between Tehran and six world powers has begun in Vienna.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, the so-called P5+1 group, intend to draft a comprehensive deal to resolve the decade-old Iranian nuclear issue. Iran’s top leader said on Tuesday his nation will not bow to pressure from the West.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged his countrymen to boost economic, scientific and military capabilities2 through increased efforts at home, saying the country will follow the "correct" path in negotiations.
This fourth round of high-level negotiations aims to reach a final agreement to limit Iran’s ability to produce nuclear weapons before a July 20 deadline. Upon arriving in Vienna, foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran has entered the talks with quote an "unflinching determination" to reach an agreement.
Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iranian Foreign Minister, said, "Now we should start negotiating and drafting the text of the final agreement. Well, it is a difficult stage. At the beginning of the talks in Vienna, we planned several meetings for this purpose. There are still three rounds of talks excluding this round, so I am hopeful. We have come here with unflinching determination to reach a result, to reach an agreement, while protecting the rights of the Iranian people."
