China’s State Internet Information Office has just published an America’s Global Surveillance Record, a few days after the government’s announcement that it would increase security checks for computer hardware and services. The Record is drafted by the China Academy of Cyber Space and reveals more details of America’s cyber espionage1 activities and their Chinese victims.
For more insight and analysis, we’re joined by Su Xiaohui, Assistant Researcher from the China Institute of International Studies. Welcome to our program.
Q1: The US has been conducting its secret surveillance on China for a long time. And last week the US Department of Justice indicted2 five Chinese military officers for hacking3 into American companies to steal trade secrets. So what kind of message is China sending to the US, through the report published at this time?
Q2: After former US National Security Agency contractor4, Edward Snowden, revealed so many details about US surveillance, the US government showed little sign of regret, let alone concrete actions to stop the surveillance. Instead, President Barack Obama has been constantly whitewashing5 spying activities. How do you see this kind of double standard?
