The Chinese government has released a white paper detailing the progress made in human rights in 2013. The document covers nine aspects including social security rights, democratic rights and personal rights.
In 2013, the annual per capita net income for both urban and rural residents increased. For rural residents, it was up 9.3 percent over the previous year in real terms. For urban residents, it was 7 percent.
By the end of 2013, the number of people covered by the new rural and urban social endowment insurance systems increased by 13.8 million.
The Internet has become an important channel for citizens to express opinions and interact. There were nearly 600 million Internet users in China in 2013. More than two-thirds accessed the internet via mobile phones.
China did away with the re-education through
labor1 system for
minor2 crimes.
China also conducted active international cultural exchanges and cooperation and signed 26 international
covenants3 on human rights.
Last November, China was elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2014 to 2016 term.
