Typhoon Rammasun has weakened to a tropical depression, but its impact on the southern regions of China is not over. China’s flood prevention office is urging people to remain alert. Rammasun landed on Friday, smashing into the provinces of Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi. So far, the strongest storm to hit southern China in 41 years has left 24 people dead or missing, and damaged over 100,000 hectares of crops and disrupted daily lives of over 7.4 million people. Houses and trees were damaged, and roads submerged. Water and electricity were also cut off.
Rescue and restoration work started on Saturday after the typhoon left the island. By Sunday evening, electricity was fully1 restored in Haikou’s main districts, and will be restored for the rest of the city within three days.
When the typhoon struck vast areas in China’s south, this is what it looked like. At ten o’clock in the evening, this super market in Haikou still had crowds of people, scrambling2 to buy up stockpiles of bottled water. Supplies of food and water are now more than adequate. And prices at grocery stores have also been stable.
"It’s just the road now. They should clear the debris3, so our supplies can get through," A shop owner said.
But still half of the city’s gas stations have yet to reopen. Many people have been lining4 up past midnight to stock up on fuel.
Most of the city’s power has been restored. But some neighbourhoods still have to rely on their own power generators5.
With almost all of the city’s traffic lights destroyed, workers are now working around the clock to get them back up.
In the city of Zhanjiang in Guangdong province, the storm sent a construction crane into Mrs Zhang’s apartment, destroying her balcony. An entire wall also collapsed6, trapping Mrs Zhang inside.
Zhang’s neighbor on the fourth floor, was also hit hard.
As the city still reels with the aftermath of Typhoon Rammasun, another storm is expected to strengthen and threaten Taiwan.
The typhoon is expected to hit the island’s east cost around Tuesday night.
