A 24-hour ceasefire has collapsed1 in Lebanon, with fresh clashes erupting between the Lebanese army and Islamist militants2.
The truce3 had come after five days of fighting in which dozens of people were killed, in the most serious spillover of Syria’s civil war into the country. Security officials say machine gun fire and shelling broke out on Wednesday morning on the outskirts4 of the town of Arsal, on the Syrian border.
The ceasefire had come into effect on Tuesday night. Saudi Arabian King Abdullah granted one billion US dollars to help the Lebanese army bolster5 security as they battle militants on the border with Syria. At least 17 soldiers have been killed and 22 are missing from the violence in and around Arsal.
