当Baker夫妇在一个寒冷的晚上来访时，Harmon先生请他们喝一杯暖酒暖暖身子。

 

抛招：The exciting match warmed their blood from the beginning.

 

精彩的比赛使他们从一开始就兴奋起来。

 

接招：在上面的2个例句中都用到了同一个词语：warm one's blood。Warm在这个短语中做动词，意思是“使......暖和起来”，blood是“血液”的意思，warm one's blood字面意思就是“使某人的血液暖和起来”，也就是“使某人热血沸腾”的意思。当一个人热血沸腾的时候，极富有激情，情绪极为高涨，因此，warm one's blood就是“make one feel warm or excited”的意思，中文意思即：使某人兴奋、高兴或使某人暖和。它有两个意思，“使某人兴奋”是其比喻义。作为比喻义，还可以这么说：warm one's heart；“使某人暖和”是其基本义。在以上两个例句中，第一句是其基本义，第二句是其比喻义。

 

下面我们再通过2个例句来熟悉这个短语的基本义和比喻义。

 

The sight of the small boy helping² the old woman warmed the people's blood in the street.

 

看到帮助老人的这个小男孩打动了街上所有人的心。

 

Your fingers and toes are numbed³ with cold and come to the fire and warm you blood.

 

你的手脚都给冻木了，快来火边暖暖身。

 

Love is fire. But whether it's gonna warm your heart or burn your house down you can never tell.

 

爱情是火，你分辨不出它是要燃烧你的心还是要燃烧你的房子。

 

On such a cold winter, may the greetings⁴ from the friends warm your heart, together with the candle lights.
