例句-1：We used to meet after work, and chew the fat over coffee and doughnuts.

 

例句-2：Most of the older women meet and chew the fat with their neighbors every morning.

 

接招：在我们刚才听到的2个句子中都可以听到同一个词语：chew the fat。Chew是“咀嚼”的意思，fat是“肥肉”的意思。Chew the fat字面意思就是吃肥肉。作为习惯用语它的意思是have a relaxed conversation or to talk idly and wast time talking，它也是闲聊、随聊的意思。Chew the fat有如今的这个意思起源于英美乡下人嚼肥肉的习惯：在还没有口香糖的年代，乡下人闲来没事习惯在嘴里嚼一块肥咸肉，就像现代人嚼口香糖一样，只是无聊时想动动嘴巴。因此，这一习俗便有了今天的引申义，chew the fat是用动动嘴巴说些话来消磨时间、打发时间。
