上回我讲到了一个习语：burn a hole in one’s pocket，用之形容“一个人挥霍金钱的情形，花钱如流水的情形，不停花钱的情形”。那么，不知道大家有没有这个习惯——不愿意把一百元换成十元，二十元的——因为钱一换散了，一下子就没了。

 

我身边有些同事朋友，burn a hole in their pockets，工资就是两三千，还天天请客吃饭，打肿脸也要撑胖子，所以我就对他们说：You should bedown-to-earth.

 

今天我们要学的这个习语就在这个句子中，它是：down-to-earth，其意思是“practical and direct in a sensible honest way”（实际的，现实的）。“You should be down-to-earth.”意思就是“你应该现实点。”我们再来看几个例句：

 

例句-1：I like your down-to-earth and hardworking spirit.

 

这句话是说：我就喜欢你们这股扎扎实实埋头苦干的劲儿。

 

例句-2：What they need is a down-to-earth spirit.

 

这句话是说：他们需要的是求实精神。

 

一个词语在不同的情况下有着不同的意思。在美语中，美国人常用down-to-earth来形容一个人“朴实无华”“平易近人”。我们来看下面的例子：

 

例句-1：My father is a very down-to-earth person, he is straightforward¹, and never tries to be someone else he’s not.

 

这句话是说：父亲是一个朴实的人，他很坦率，从来不做作。

 

例句-2：He needs to marry a down-to-earth person who will organize his life for him.

 

这句话是说：他需要娶个讲求实际的人做妻子好为他安排生活。

 

例句-3：All over the world, people love to go to the movies, what kinds of movies do you want to see? I like the movies that are down-to-earth. More down-to-earth, more touching²!

 

这段话是说：全世界的人们都喜欢看电影，你喜欢哪一类的？我喜欢那些朴实的电影，越朴实，我觉得越感人。
