影片对白

Jon: I want you to know, you're the most important thing in my life.

Garfield: Let me sleep, please.

Jon: Before I met you, my life had no meaning. I was incomplete.

Garfield: Oh, you still are, really.

Jon: I guess what I'm trying to say is...will you marry me?

Garfield: Eh? Marriage? Well, this is kind of sudden. There may be some legal issues here. Look, I like you, but not as a spouse1. Maybe as a servant, we could stay together, make it work.

Jon: So what do you say... Liz?

Garfield: Wait a second. Liz? Liz?

Jon: Garfield.

Garfield: Liz is a girl. No, worse. She's a girl vet2.

Jon: Turkey's ready.

Garfield: Well, I think Jon has touched bottom now. Hmm, we gotta put an end to this torture. Time for a new DJ. Somebody take my temperature.

Jon: Garfield!

Garfield: Whoa! Man, you have changed.

Jon: I can't have you messing this up for me, okay?

Garfield: Oh, I get it. It's her. She doesn't like our music. Whatever happened to Jon? My metal-head guy. My dude. You were so much cooler when you wore a mullet.

Jon: Now stay here.

Garfield: So much cooler. I suppose she likes this haircut.

Jon: Coming!

Garfield: Tell me she likes it the way it is now.

Jon: Hey, Liz.

Liz: Jon, I have incredible news. Guess who's going to be speaking at this year's fund-raiser for the royal Animal Conservancy.

Jon: Siegfried and Roy?

Liz: Oh, come on.

Jon: Just Siegfried?

Liz: Jane Goodall dropped out at the last minute because she's nursing a sick chimp3 and they asked me. I mean, it's gonna be at this really cool castle on a huge estate.

Jon: Well, Liz, that-that's...

Liz: I am flying to London tomorrow morning. Can you believe it?

Jon: What?

Liz: I mean, I have to pack, and...Oh, are these rose petals4 and candles?

Jon: Yeah, well, Liz, I have, have some... some important news of-of-of my own. Uh...

Garfield: Hey, me, too. Excuse me, do you believe in love at first sight? I was hoping you'd say yes. You have made me so very, very cat-happy.

Jon: Uh...

Liz: Well, come on. What's the news?

Jon: The news is, I, uh...I finally house-trained Odie.

Liz: Really?

Jon: Yeah.

Liz: That would explain the rose petals. I have to pack. I'm so sorry about dinner. But you know what? I will send your regards to the queen. Okay, congratulations on Odie.

Jon: Oh, oh, yeah. And, hey, you, too. They're lucky to have you.

Liz: Bye.

Garfield: Oh, I thought she'd never leave.

Jon: Garfield, you ate the whole turkey?

Garfield: Well, yeah.

Jon: What are you doing with this? Oh, never mind. She's already off to...

Garfield: Well, come on, cheer up. I saved you the wishbone.

Jon: There's nothing I can do.

Garfield: Sure there is. Return the ring and get your money back.

Jon: Wait a minute. I'll go to London.

Garfield: Oh, you poor sap.

Jon: She'll love it. She'll be surprised.

Garfield: Please don't do this.

Jon: She'll be thrilled.

Garfield: Tell me you're not gonna do this.

Jon: She'll say yes.

Garfield: Please, don't.

Jon: I gotta go pack.

Garfield: You moron5. This is a huge mistake, Jon. One of your biggest. Don't roam. Stay home. Odie and I are not just coming along for the ride, pal6. This is actually an intervention7.

Jon: Okay, guys. Here we are.

Garfield: Oh, quick flight. We must have been in the jet stream. England is no great shakes, huh? I mean, the buildings here look like, uh, the kennel8 back home. That is the kennel back home.

文化面面观

一只猫的传奇--Garfield

Garfield is a comic strip created by Jim Davis, featuring the cat Garfield, the pet dog Odie, and their socially inept12 owner Jon Arbuckle. As of 2006, it is syndicated in roughly 2,570 newspapers and journals and it currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip. The popularity of the strip has led to an animated13 cartoon show, several animated television specials and two feature-length live-action films, as well as a large amount of Garfield-related merchandise.

Garfield debuted15 on June 19, 1978, which fans (as well as the characters) consider Garfield's birthday. The strip pokes16 fun at pet owners and their relationship with their pets, often portraying18 the pet as the true master of the home. Garfield also struggles with human problems, such as diets, loathing19 of Mondays, apathy20, boredom21, and so on. Garfield is able to understand anything that Jon or other humans say. He supposedly cannot talk back, but often Jon seems to be able to tell what he is saying just from his expression or gestures which are much like those of a human. However, Garfield is able to talk in "thinking" to Odie and the other animals. Odie understands what Garfield says to him, but in general cannot communicate back to Garfield except by barking because he is the only character that doesn't seem to have any normal way of communicating. Although, Odie did have two thought bubbles with words in the strip. In an earlier strip, Odie is shown poking22 his previous owner (Lyman) and it is written in his thought bubble "I'm hungry." In a second strip, Odie is on the fence in the alley23 with Garfield and it is written in his thought bubble "O sole mio." Most of the other animals (Arlene, Nermal, mice, and the other dogs) are capable of a two-way conversation with Garfield. Garfield, apparently24, is able to type, and he has written messages that Jon has read and understood (typically letters to Santa Claus); however, this happens very rarely. He is also apparently able to tell time (although this, as well, has often been the subject of controversy25 because he repeatedly states than he can't).

Learning from the indifference26 his previous comic strip creation Gnorm Gnat27 met with, Jim Davis has made a conscious effort to include all readers in Garfield; keeping the jokes broad and the humor general and applicable to everyone. As a result the strip typically avoids the social or political commentary present in some of Garfield's contemporaries, such as Boondocks, Doonesbury, Dilbert, and Cathy. Although a couple of strips in 1978 addressed inflation and, arguably, organized labor28, as well as Jon frequently smoking a pipe or subscribing29 to a "bachelor magazine," these elements were ultimately pruned30 from the product with the intent of maintaining a more universal appeal.

The comic strip was turned into a cartoon special for television in 1982 called Here Comes Garfield. Actor Lorenzo Music, previously31 known as the voice of Carlton the doorman on the show Rhoda, was hired to portray17 the voice of Garfield. Soul singer Lou Rawls provided musical accompaniment. Twelve television specials were made (through 1991) as well as a television series, Garfield and Friends, which ran from 1988 to 1995.

For his work on the strip, creator Jim Davis received the National Cartoonist Society Humor Strip Award for 1981 and 1985, and their Reuben Award for 1989.

A live-action movie version of the comic strip, Garfield: The Movie had its debut14 in the United States on June 11, 2004. The film employed a computer-animated Garfield and live-action Odie. Garfield's second live-action feature film, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, was released on June 16, 2006.
