Kennedy School was originally the Graduate School of Public Administration (GSPA). The idea of a school of public affairs at Harvard was bom in the midst of the Great Depression and on the eve of World War II. As government grappled with historic challenges, both domestic and international, Harvard alumnus Lucius N. Littauer backed his vision of a school for a new professional governing class with an unprecedented1 $2 million gift, then the largest single gift from an individual donor2 ever given to a university. In 1936,GSPA was born with Littauer’s donation. At first, there were only 20 students in total. In 1939,the Littauer Center, home of the GSPA for the next four decades, was built on Kirkland Street. In 1966 the school was renamed the Kennedy School of Government and the Institute of Politics (IOP) was established as a memorial to the slain3 president. Originally, IOP mainly foster undergraduates. Then in 1978,the School moved into its new home, which is situated4 on the banks of the Charles River, and merged5 with IOP.
