Student organizations at Harvard can fall into more than ten categories. In addition to the organizations that are aimed at all the students, such as The Harvard Crimson1 and International Relations Council (IRC), there are organizations that serve students from a specific area or country. For example, there are many organizations that are founded by Chinese students and whose purposes are to help Chinese students and to promote Chinese culture.
For undergraduate Chinese students, the biggest Chinese organization is the Harvard-Radcliffe Chinese Students Association (HRCSA), which was founded in 1974. HRCSA is one of the largest and most active student organizations on campus, with nearly one thousand general members and 20 board members. As a home to Harvard's Chinese and Chinese-American community, HRCSA serves as a
forum2 for social, cultural, and educational/political interaction among students of all backgrounds. HRCSA hosts nearly 80 events each year, including general meetings, guest speakers on politics and culture, holiday festivals, parties, and more.
Another
influential3 and helpful Chinese students organization at Harvard is the Harvard Chinese Students and Scholars Association(HCSSA). It is different from HRCSA in that it serves graduate Chinese students. As most students and scholars go to Harvard for further academic education, they generally have no difficulty in academic communication. But for most of them, life is not easy. Some have never been to the United States. Others may have visited the United States, and even have American friends. But even so, American culture is still a big leap for most of them, because observing something as an outsider is definitely different than experiencing it on one’s own.
Therefore the mission of HCSSA is to provide opportunities and benefits for its members by facilitating the exchange of information between China and Chinese students studying abroad and by defending the rights of its members. HCSSA is also
dedicated4 to the goal of promoting social, intellectual and cultural activities for Chinese students and scholars at Harvard University. It even strives to create a greater
awareness5 of Chinese culture among Americans.
In addition to HRCSA and HCSSA, there are many other Chinese students’ organizations, such as Chinese Chess Club, Chinese International Students Society, and Harvard Taiwan ROC Students Club(HTROCSC), etc.
