The Group of Seven annual meeting has also highlighted the dangers of nuclear war. As many as 140,000 had died in the sites of the first atomic bombings dropped by the US on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

This threat has been renewed by the DPRK, as it has taken a series of actions this year that have ramped up regional tensions.

A solemn backdrop to the summit-giving G7 leaders a platform to call for a world without nuclear weapons, and highlight what they called a continued provocative action by the DPRK.

"We came here and drew from the experience of touring in this museum how critical it is that we all apply the lessons of the past to the future and the present," Kerry said.

Terrorism also top of the agenda following the recent attack in Turkey, Belgium and Pakistan and beyond-a G7 action plan is promised in May.

But in a separate communiqué on maritime security the leaders of the US, Japan, Canada, the UK, France, Germany and Italy also expressed concerns in the East and South China seas and seemed to point the finger at China.

The statement partially reads:

"We are concerned about the situation in the East and South China Seas, and emphasize the fundamental importance of peaceful management and settlement of disputes. We express our strong opposition to any intimidating, coercive or provocative unilateral actions that could alter the status quo and increase tensions."

China rejected the statement, suggesting that the G7 should not involve itself in sovereignty issues that are best solved bilaterally between states.

"if the G7 wants to continue playing a major role in the world, it should take an attitude of seeking truth from the facts to handle the issues the international community is most concerned with at the moment," said Lu Kang, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"If the G7 is taken hostage by the selfish interests of certain countries, then this probably won't be beneficial to the G7's influence, role and future development."

The Chinese ministry of Foreign affairs also stated that while holding of the G7 in Hiroshima served as a reminder of Japan being a victim of nuclear aggression it also served as reminder of Japanese militarism during the same period.
