A delegation from Taiwan has arrived in Beijing to discuss the recent Kenya telecom fraud case, which impacts both Taiwan and the mainland. The delegation, which consists of senior judicial officials, hopes to establish a means to jointly look into the case while, at the same time, guaranteeing the rights of those who have been arrested as part of the investigation.
The Chinese mainland and Taiwan disagree over how Kenya deported suspects allegedly involved in the fraud to China. Taiwan says the Mainland should not interfere in the legal affairs of their residents abroad.
However, Chinese mainland said it has jurisdiction because the victims of the fraud were residents of the mainland and claimed Taiwan hadn't sufficiently punished the perpetrators of similar scams in the past. The delegation will work with the Ministry of Public Security and Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council to set the agenda for the discussions.
