The Brazilian Senate has voted in favor of an impeachment trial against President Dilma Rousseff. This means she will be suspended from office.
Following a marathon session running into early Thursday morning local time, 55 senators voted in favour of putting the President on trial for breaking budget laws. The result marks the suspension of Brazil's first female president, ending more than 13 years of rule by the left-wing Workers Party.
Vice President Michel Temer will take over as acting president during her trial. Rousseff denied the charges and made a last-ditch appeal to the Supreme Court to stop proceedings, but the move was rejected.
