Chinese language students are competing in a worldwide Chinese-proficiency contest that culminates with finals in China. They will come from all over the world, even as far as Zimbabwe. CCTV's correspondent heads to the Confucius Institute there and introduces us to some of the hopefuls.

Students from the country's top university participated in the 15th 'Chinese Bridge' competition in Harare. Showing their diversity and willingness to grow in their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture.

"It's a very good competition, because it enables students to meet other students from all over the world who are studying Chinese. It also enables them to have exposure, you know, to the levels of Chinese proficiency among students elsewhere," said Professor Pedzisai Mashiri from Confucius Institute, University of Zimbabwe.

China and Zimbabwe have a long relationship, fostered through a range of culture, language, and educational exchanges that have promoted mutual understanding.

"It's very important for people to understand each other, to have a better understanding of each other, if we want to carry on with this good relationship. So, by providing opportunity and a chance for students to learn Chinese language and culture, I think this is a bridge of bringing people from both sides together," said Huang Ping, China's Ambassador to Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe has participated in the competitions for four years now, and every year, universities that teach the Chinese language send two people to the finals in China.

"I think I still have to work hard, because compared with other competitors outside the country, they are really good. Some of them even, you know, write HSK Level 6, like the last level - HSK, testing your proficiency, your Chinese proficiency. So I think I really need to work hard, you know, to represent Zimbabwe," said Michael Dizha, winner of "Chinese Bridge" competition.

Winners in competitions held around the world get the opportunity to travel to China to compete for the top prize. Winners also get scholarships to study in Chinese universities to further their studies.
