Japan's opposition parties have called for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to resign should he fail to implement the tax hike.
The heads of the Democratic, Communist, Social Democratic and People's Life parties, will submit a non-confidence resolution to the House of Representatives later today.
They say the decision due to the failure of so-called "Abenomics", the passing of controversial new security legislation, and the corruption scandal linked to former Finance Minister Akira Amari.
They also demanded a general election be held at the same time as the House of Councillors' election scheduled for July.
