The guest speakers may come from a range of backgrounds and fields, including writers, politicians, actors, and musicians, and so on and so forth1, depending on the Master's contacts and interest levels. They may be invited to the colleges by mailed invitations or telephone calls. At times, a Master or a student may have personal friendship with a guest, which makes it easier to invite the guest.
Master's tea is held in Master's House, which is typically a
cozy2, clubby, paneled room with leaded windows and leather couches and chairs, having a seating capacity of around 20 people. It is open to students of that same college hosting the Tea. Sometimes, if there's space, students from other colleges are also accepted. Some colleges are more open. For Calhoun College, each Master's tea is generally open to all Yale students. In addition, although it's OK for students to dress
casually3, they are expected to arrive on time, especially when the guest so famous as to draw a large audience.
Typically, Master's teas are held once a week and begin at 4 p.m.. Some colleges may hold them more frequently than others, while some less. For instance, during the past two years, Trumbull College has hosted a series of Master's teas entitled "Experience and Choice." Headed by Joshua Kleinfeld, the series was geared toward preparing students to confront the
plethora4 of professional and personal choices with the approaching graduation. As Kleinfeld put it, "What we needed---experience-was
precisely5 what we lacked, and I thought advice from people who had led interesting, diverse, and reflective lives might help."
As Kelly Brownell, former Master of Silliman, said, "Master's teas provide an excellent opportunity for students to know
accomplished6 people as individuals." And unlike the
impersonal7 format8 of a large lecture or speech, "meeting people and asking what inspires them, what concerns them, or how to become involved in their field is
invaluable9."
