 　　2003年10月，乔治·约翰逊成功号召人们用“miserable failure”(惨败)这个关键词做为链接文字，链接向美国白宫网站布什总统的个人介绍页。两个月后，在Google搜索“miserable failure”的时候，布什的这个个人介绍页升到第一，搜“failure”的时候也是第一。

　　利用谷歌来提升有关报道的文章或网页的点击率，以此让搜索者能更容易找到这些文章或网页的方法称之为“谷歌炸弹”。
　　A Google bomb occurs when a group of people conspire1 to artificially elevate a website in Google's web search results ranking by linking a particular word or phrase to the website.
　　一些人密谋一起将一个特定的单词或短语链接到某个网站，人为地提升这个网站在谷歌搜索结果页面的排名，这就是“谷歌炸弹”。
　　Google moved to curb2 Google bombs by tweaking their formula for ranking pages by relevancy. The changes limited the ability of relatively3 small groups to create Google bombs, but it did not end it entirely4.
　　谷歌曾通过关联性来调整搜索页面的排序算法，以此来控制谷歌炸弹的出现。这限制了相对较小的团体制造谷歌炸弹的能力，但没能完全杜绝谷歌炸弹的发生。
　　Google bombs rely heavily on the influence of PageRank. Some Google bombs are politically motivated while others are done as pranks5, and some may have been motivated by ego6 or self-promotion.
　　谷歌炸弹非常依赖网页排名的影响。一些谷歌炸弹有政治动机，还有一些仅仅是恶作剧，也有一些可能是为了自我推销。
