British Prime Minister Theresa May has signed a letter on Tuesday to European Council President Donald Tusk invoking Article 50 to leave the bloc.
The letter is due to be delivered by hand to Tusk in Brussels on Wednesday by Tim Barrow, Britain's permanent representative to the EU.
The council is expected to give a preliminary reply within two days. It will take weeks to initiate talks extricating the British economy from the EU and agreements made with the remaining 27 member states.
