Heartbreak has been a source of musical inspiration¹ pretty much since there's been music. This summer, singer-songwriter Dua Lipa takes her crack at the theme with her tune² "New Rules." In the all-female "New Rules" music video, the singer and her friends share some lessons about how to get over a broken heart.

LIPA: There are three rules which I would've liked to tell myself after a breakup.

LIPA: (Singing) One, don't pick up the phone. You know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone. Two, don't let him in. You'll have to kick him out again. Three, don't be his friend. You know you're going to wake up in his bed in the morning. And if you're under him, you ain't getting over him.

They're not necessarily rules that I've been able to stick by. But they're kind of rules that I feel like it's important to be able to tell yourself and to be able to tell your friends in kind of not going back to your ex because it could be - you know, there's a reason people break up. And it's probably the same reason why you shouldn't get back together.

LIPA: (Singing) I keep pushing forwards, but he keeps pulling me backwards³. Nowhere to turn - no way. Nowhere to turn.

What I wanted to convey in this video is the unity⁴ and the togetherness of, you know, women supporting each other and helping⁵ each other and looking after each other in this situation - you know, just kind of being together in a sleepover and talking about certain things that are kind of going wrong in a relationship and your friends being able to help you out. Helping you overcome those things - I feel like my friends and my family.

LIPA: (Singing) I got new rules. I count them.

I think the most important thing is to be yourself. Everyone is so special in their own way. And someone is going to fall in love with them just the way they are. And they shouldn't change a single thing about it.
