　　and being the most athletic¹ seaman² of them all, Steelkilt had been regularly assigned captain of one of the gangs; 斯蒂尔基尔特因为是大伙里力气最大的，向来总被指派为其中一班的班长；

　　consequently he should have been freed from any trivial business not connected with truly nautical³ duties, such being the case with his comrades. 因此，他本来就可以免掉任何的确与抽水任务无关的琐事，他的伙伴也是如此。

　　as he instinctively⁹ saw all this, that strange forbearance and unwillingness¹⁰ to stir up the deeper passionateness¹¹ in any already ireful being-- 总之，在他本能地看到这一切的时候，那种奇特的忍耐工夫和不愿意对任何一个本来就已叫人生厌的人激起更进一步的怒火——

　　a repugnance¹² most felt, when felt at all, by really valiant¹³ men even when aggrieved--  这是真正骁勇的人哪怕在受迫害的时候也最最感到厌恶的事——

　　this nameless phantom¹⁴ feeling, gentlemen, stole over Steelkilt. 诸位先生，斯蒂尔基尔特就不知不觉地产生了这种难以名状的虚幻的感情。
