　　and in due time arrived at Tahiti, his own place of destination.  及时到达他自己的目的地——塔希提。

　　There, luck befriended him; two ships were about to sail for France, and were providentially in want of precisely² that number of men which the sailor headed.  到了那里，运气照顾了他；恰好有两艘要开往法国的船，而且真是天意注定，他们不多不少，正缺少这个水手所带来的这伙人的数目。

　　They embarked³, and so for ever got the start of their former captain, had he been at all minded to work them legal retribution. 他们都上了船，这样，如果他们先前那个船长，一心一意想给他们以法律的报复，那他们可始终比那个船长占先一着了。

　　Chartering a small native schooner⁶, he returned with them to his vessel⁷; and finding all right there, again resumed his cruisings." 那船长租到了一艘本地的纵帆式小船后，就带着他们一起回到自己的船上；他在那边把各事办妥后，又重新开始他的巡游。

　　Where Steelkilt now is, gentlemen, none know; “现在斯蒂尔基尔特在什么地方，诸位先生，那是谁都不知道的；

　　but upon the island of Nantucket, the widow of Radney still turns to the sea which refuses to give up its dead; 不过在南塔开特岛上，拉德尼那个未亡人却还在望着那个不肯放回死者的大海；
