Part 1 The History of Mother's Day 母亲节的历史

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations are traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated3 a day called "Mothering Sunday", celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent. "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England.

During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive4 touch.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" -- the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.

All across the world, more than 46 countries honor mothers with a special day, but not all nations celebrate on the same day. We honor mothers with cards, candy, flowers and dinner out. But have you ever considered how this became a legal holiday in the United States?

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward5 Howe as a day dedicated6 to peace. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful, by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

The one-woman crusade of Ana Jarvis is often overlooked in history books because women during the early 1900s were engaged in so many other reform efforts, but it is likely that these other reforms helped pave the way for Anna Jarvis to succeed in her campaign for Mother's Day.

While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

    Ana Jarvis

Part 2 Mother Knows Best

Dialogue Script 1

Mom: Jimmy! Why aren't you up and ready for school?
Jimmy: I don't feel very good.
Mom: Jimmy, if you're acting7 sick just because you want to play hooky...
Jimmy: (Coughing) No, Mom, I'm really sick.
Mom: Oh, that's a nasty cough. Let me feel your head. (feels his forehead) You're on fire!
Jimmy: Mom!???
Mom: I know, sweetheart. Just open wide. Don't talk. (takes temperature)
Jimmy: Mmm...
Mom: (Takes thermometer out) Oh, you've got a fever. One-oh-one...time to break out the children's Tylenol.
Jimmy: I have the chills. Can you turn on the heater?
Mom: We're not turning on the heater in May! You need to take a bath. We'll heat you up and see if you can sweat this thing out.

Why aren't you up and ready for school? Is Peter up yet? I was up late last night. She was up all night with a sick child.

开始的时候,妈妈还以为Jimmy是在装病,if you're acting sick just because you want to play hooky...

结果妈妈惊叫道,You' re on fire! 发烧大家都知道了,就是get/have a fever。

6. 所以妈妈说time to break out the children's Tylenol.

7. Jimmy还在打冷战,浑身发冷,就是have the chills。

Dialogue Script 2

Jimmy: Ouch! The water's too hot!
Mom: Get in slowly. You'll get used to it. I'm gonna go and make you some chicken soup.
Jimmy: I'm not hungry.
Mom: I know you don't have an appetite, but you need to eat something. You'll get too weak if you don't eat.
Jimmy: (A few minutes later) Ohh...I'm sweating already. It's so hot. I can feel it boiling! Can I get out yet?
Mom: That's a good sign. But just soak a little longer, OK?
Jimmy: I'm done. Can I watch TV?
Mom: Here's some water. Take these multi-vitamins and Tylenol.
Jimmy: (Trying to swallow) Uh! I can't swallow them, Mom!
Mom: Your throat must be swollen10.
Jimmy: Do I have to take them?
Mom: Here. I'll break them up, so they're smaller. And here's some cough syrup11.
Jimmy: (Swallows) Yuck!
Mom: I know, it tastes horrible. But it'll make you feel better. Try holding your nose. It won't taste as bad.

Chicken Soup for the Soul。 Chicken soup is a common home remedy for kids or adults that have colds.

don't have an appetite就是指“没有胃口,食欲不振”,还可以说“have no appetite”。

He had no appetite for the fight. She has an amazing appetite for hard work.

The dirty clothes are soaking in soapy water. Leave the beans to soak overnight. Give the sheets a good soak.

Your throat must be swollen.

Dialogue Script 3

Jimmy: Mom!
Mom: What are you doing?
Jimmy: I'm playing with my new basketball! Watch this!
Mom: You are sick, young man. Get back in bed! I called you in sick today, so you're going to lie down and fight that flu.
Jimmy: But I feel better now.
Mom: Then maybe you should go to school. If you're feeling so much better, you'll ace1 that English test, right?
Jimmy: OK. I get it. I'm getting back into bed...
Mom: Come to think of it, you should get out your English books and catch up on your reading assignments.
Jimmy: But I don't have any reading assignments.
Mom: Then review your test. You'll do even better. And maybe reading will help you get to sleep.
Jimmy: Aw, Mom---you're such a drag.
Mom: You say that now, Jimmy, but you'll thank me later. I'm your mom, and mother knows best.

call someone in sick

Then maybe you should go to school. If you're feeling so much better, you'll ace that English test, right?

come to think of it 这个短语表示“… I've got a lot of work to catch up on.

4. catch up on something Come over for a chat so we can catch up on each other's news.

5. Jimmy很烦,说Aw, Mom---you're such a drag. Walking is a drag – let's get a taxi. She loves her family, but they're a drag on her career.

You say that now, Jimmy, but you'll thank me later. I'm your mom, and mother knows best. Mother knows best.
