From the CNN Center in Atlanta. I’m Josh Levs. Thanks for checking in with us. Here’s a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
We are getting some new videos from Pakistan. This amateur video shows former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto just moments before her assassination1. And it shows a close-up of Bhutto, standing2 up in her car and waving to the crowd after a rally. No bit later it shows a bright yellow flash. Meanwhile Pakistan's government says it will allow British investigators3 to look into the killing4.
A huge political demonstration5 is now set for Tuesday in Kenya’s capital. The rally was scheduled for today. But riot police fired tear gas and water cannons6 at people who had gathered for it. Now supporters of opposition7 leader are angry about the reelection of the current president. They say the vote was a shame.
Iowa, might have heared that the mention that small state that, with a big-time political power, kicks off Election 2008 today. Candidates and their staffs are heading towns, trying to get every supporter they can to tonight’s caucuses8. They spent 40 million dollars on TV ads and many Iowa voters talked about the constant phonecalls and knocks on the door from the campaigns.
An escaped convict who overpowered five guards at a Maryland hospital was killed in a police shootout. Kevin Poke9 complained of chest pains earlier this week. When guards took him to the hospital, he escaped. Authorities say he shot a man and stole cars while on the run. Seven hours later police cornered him in a cemetery10. He was serving a life sentence for kidnapping and carjacking.
San Francisco Zoo is set to reopen today after the deadly tiger attack on Christmas Day. And a new witness has come forward telling the San Francisco Chronicle the tiger may have been taunted11 before she escaped. She says she was there with her family and saw the victims of the attack teasing the animal screaming and growling12 at the big cat. But an attorney for the surviving victims,Mark Geragos, denies his clients did anything to provoke the tiger.
As the reigning13 champ of round-trips for the third year in a row, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta was the busiest in the country. About a million flights came and went last year. That translates to more than 40 million passengers. Chicago’s O’hare was a close second and Dallas-Fort Worth came in a distant third.
