Being a Secretary

Dialogue 1

-Good morning,Ma'am.

-Good morning.

-Are you Director Xiao, the office manager?

-Yes,I am.Who are you?

-I'm the new secretary.

-Oh,yes.I was out of town last week and didn't get to meet you. What's your name?

-My name's Su Xinxin.

-It's nice to have you with us.We have a lot of work to do here. You'll be very busy. That's your desk over there.

-Thank you.Director Xiao.

-And that's your computer. There's a fax machine at either end of the corridor.

-It's really convenient.I love this place.

-And please call me Xiao Yanli.

-Thank you,Ms Xiao and I'd like to be called Sue.

Dialogue 2

-I need a letter faxed to Mr. Smith and I need it ASAP.

-I'm happy to write the letter, however ,i'm still working on the report that you wanted me to get out today and it looks like I'll have to work overtime1 just to get it done.

-But you told me you were perfect. You had me believe you could do at least two or three things at the same time. That's why I hired you.

-I thought you were a perfect boss, too. What happened?

-Well,it's like what I tell my partner.Success is measured by how many balls you can juggle2 in the air at once.

-We're all doing a lot of juggling3 around here, aren't we?

-Yeah,and this isn't intended to be a show.

-Give me some direction regarding your priorities and I'll get back to work.I'll even work through my lunch hour, but I'd like to go home early

tomorrow if that's all right.

-Well,I think we had better get the letter off to Mr.Smith.Then if you can stay late to finish the report,I'd really appreciate it.Remind me to give

you a raise.

-I'll be sure to remind you.

Dialogue 3

-Would you please take my clothes to the cleaners?I left them in my car.And where is my coffee?

-I've worked for you too long without making any complaints.I need to remind you that I was hired to do clerical work, not to run personal errands for you.

-I'm a busy man.Any way that you can make my life easier makes my time more productive.

-I guess I feel the same way.I like to be productive, too. The time I spend running errands and making coffee is time I can't spend writing reports or organizing files. But most of all,it seems demeaning to me to do your litle personal jobs. You need to hire anerrand boy and a maid so I can get my work done.

-I'm sorry you feel that way,but I don't think I'm going to change in the near future. If I hired a maid and an errand boy,I probably wouldn't need

you.

-Would you be offended if I made an application for a transfer to a different department?

-I like your work, but I understand your complaint.Maybe that's the best solution to your problem.

Dialogue 4

-Hi,Xiao Zhang,how's it going?

-Not too bad.How about yourself?

-I'm exhausted4.I had to work until 2 o'clock this morning.

-Take it easy.Don't work too hard.

-No way.I must get everything ready before noon.

-Then,take this afternoon off.
