Hello, I'm Melissa Long, here at the CNN Center in Atlanta. It's Monday afternoon, here's a look at some of the stories happening Now In The News.
First a 35-count indictment1 against five former Blackwater security guards, that decision by the Justice Department today. Officials said the defendants2 opened fire on Iraqi civilians3 last year without justification4, killing5 or injuring 34 people. Women and children were among those fired upon at that busy Baghdad intersection6. And the men surrendered this morning at a court in Utah. A sixth Blackwater guard has entered a guilty plea in connection with the shooting.
Keeping the Big Three Automakers from running out of gas, a draft bill for a bailout loan could come later today with a vote as soon as tomorrow. Lawmakers are still working out the details. But congressional aids say the package is expected to be about 15 billion dollars. The money would come from a technology program for fuel-efficient vehicles and could be overseen8 by the formation of a new cabinet-level position.
And today we are hearing of still more layoffs9 at the hands of the struggling economy. Dow Chemical says it's slashing10 5000 jobs or more than 10 percent of its global work force. The company's also shutting down 20 plants and letting go of 6,000 contract workers. 3M also cutting jobs, the maker7 of Post-It notes and Scotch11 Tape is laying off 18 hundred workers, mostly in the U. S. , Western Europe and Japan. That's what the company calls an aggressive cost cutting measure.
Pakistani forces say they've raided a camp used by the terrorist group blamed for the deadly attacks in Mumbai. It happened at a militant12 camp in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir. Pakistani military officials say 15 people were arrested in that raid. It's the first sign of a government action against the Islamic military group claiming responsibility for the attack. One hundred and sixty people were killed in the attacks in Mumbai.
Protest in Greece stretching into a third day. As students in Athens clashed with police outside the parliament. Some of our iReporters were able to catch the action and the aftermath. The demonstrations13 and the riots came after a police involved shooting after a 16-year-old dead. The officer claimed he shot the 16-year old as he and a group of teens attacked the police officer's vehicle. But now he is charged with premeditated murder. The Prime Minister is vowing14 to end these riots.
And those are the headlines making news at this hour. Do stay with CNN and CNN. com for more on these stories or other news of the day.
