今天我们要讲几个在美国总统大选的竞选阶段常会用到的习惯用语。美国总统大选每四年举行一次。在大选年的前一年,准备竞争本党总统候选人提名的人士就已经在各州积极展开竞选活动了，为大选年早春开始的初选作准备。

各州的初选时间不一，在大选年上半年的五个月时间内陆续举行，选拔出各州参加党的全国大会的代表。而两党的全国大会往往都在大选年的夏天举行。在这个大会上正式确定出本党的一位总统候选人。然后各党派的总统候选人要从夏天一直竞选到11月初的大选日。

这样看来总统竞选过程相当漫长，而有志竞选总统的人得奔波于各大城市间，出席政治性的餐会，寻求支持，并为竞选募款。这些餐会场面浩大，但是菜肴通常毫不出色，主菜往往是煮过头的鸡。鸡肉就像橡皮一样，嚼之无味而且百嚼不烂。于是就产生了这个习惯用语: the rubber chicken circuit。

Rubber意思是橡皮，circuit解释巡回旅行，显然指那些候选人为竞选而往返各地的旅行。他们每到一处就举行募款餐会，主菜老是那些老而无味橡皮似的鸡，当然醉翁之意不在酒，要紧的是候选人的即席讲演，能说动与会者心甘情愿为他出钱出力。我们来听个例子。

我们再学个在有关竞选的习惯用语: launch pad。 Launch是发射，pad这里是指平台。所以launch pad就是发射台。火箭是从地上的厚厚的水泥台上发往太空的。这筑起的水泥台就是launch pad。但是launch pad被转用到大选中，用来指开展某种活动吸引电视新闻界，以便当候选人在活动中宣布参选时有电视新闻记者为他大造声势。我们来听个例子。

例句-2：The new candidate made his announcement during a speech to a war veterans group. He thought this was a good launch pad because he himself served as a soldier in the Vietnam war.

我们再学个竞选中用的习惯用语: dark horse。在赛马中dark horse是一匹默默无闻、得胜希望渺茫的马。那么dark horse用在竞选中指什么呢? 我们听个例子来琢磨它的意思。

例句-3：This young governor is a dark horse, because he comes from a small state and many voters in other states have never heard of him; he has a hard uphill road ahead of him.

他说：这位参选的州长年纪轻轻，而且来自一个小州；外州的许多选民根本从来没听说过他，所以他的竞选前途该象走上坡路一般地艰难吃力。

这样看来这里的dark horse是指默默无闻、成功希望渺茫的候选人，在竞选中一名dark horse更是需要好的launch pad，来为他造就声势，扩大他的知名度。
