Catastrophic fire warnings continue in the south and east of Australia today as temperatures soar into the mid1 40s. There is a total fire ban in much of Victoria and southern New South Wales. Commuters in Melbourne are facing more delays as the extreme heat causes power failures and cancellation2 of trains. The city Mel sweltered through its hottest night ever with temperatures at midnight still at 37 degrees. 

Police are questioning a man over a fatal stabbing in Sydney's west last night. Investigators3 say a man in his 40s was killed during a dispute at a unit block in Belmore. In another case, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed on a bus at Ambarvale while a teenage girl was stabbed during a fight at Surry Hills. 

Chinese officials say they've wrapped up their investigation4 into the former Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu and are now waiting for prosecutors5 to decide whether his case will go to trial. 

And tombs found in Egypt have shed new light on the lives of the men who built the pyramids. Archaeologists say the graves suggest the pyramids were built by free workers and not slaves. They ate meals regularly, worked in three-month shifts and were given the honour of being buried  in mud brick tombs.
