Up to 300 people have been killed in a stampede in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. Hundreds of people were heading to the island to celebrate the end of the annual Water Festival. The death toll² is expected to rise.

 

Police have shot dead a man during an armed hold-up at a pub in Sydney's west. A second man was shot by police and is in a stable condition. Officers are now looking for a third man who fled the scene in a car.

 

No charges will be laid against a Queensland police officer over the death in custody³ of Cameron Doomadgee in 2004. Queensland's Crime and Misconduct Commission says it won't recommend charges be laid against Senior Sergeant⁴ Chris Hurley. Cameron Doomadgee died of massive internal injuries in the Palm Island watch-house. A third coronial inquest into the death delivered an open finding.

 

And the economic bailout has pushed the Irish government to crisis point with two main opposition⁵ parties calling for an immediate⁶ general election. Ireland has accepted a $120 billion bailout from the EU. The opposition parties want a new government which can map out a four-year austerity plan.
