There won’t be any targets in the Government’s population plan which will be released today. Population Minister Tony Burke has been working on the strategy for more than a year. It’s expected to focus on the economic benefits of population growth and just how to manage the country’s infrastructure³ needs. 

 

A NATO air strike on Colonel Gaddafi’s Tripoli compound has killed three people and injured more than 20. The attack came just hours after the Libyan leader made his first appearance on state TV in two weeks. Meanwhile, rebel leaders are in London for talks. They met the British Prime Minister David Cameron who invited them to set up an office in London.

 

Security forces have reportedly used batons⁴ to break up a large student demonstration⁵ in Syria’s second biggest city. This amateur vision apparently⁶ shows thousands of students in Aleppo staging a demonstration outside their dormitories. They were demanding an end to the military crackdown. The United States has again condemned⁷ the violence and is urging Syrian authorities to talk to the demonstrators. 

 

And a 91-year-old convicted war criminal has escaped jail because of his age. A German court has found the man guilty of helping⁸ to murder almost 30,000 Jews at a Nazi⁹ death camp during World War II.
