英语新闻:澳护照允许出现“第三种”性别

时间:2011-09-17 06:23:47

(单词翻译:单击)

Australians have been given a third choice when describing their gender1 on passport applications, under new guidelines aimed at removing discrimination.

在新的消除歧视的指导方针下,澳大利亚政府对于申请其护照的人的性别给出了第三种选择。

Transgender people and those of ambiguous(模糊不清的) sex will be able to list their gender as indeterminate, which will be shown on passports as an X.

People whose gender was different from that of their birth were previously2 required to have reassignment surgery before they could change their passport to their preferred sex.

An Australian senator, Louise Pratt - whose partner was born female and is now identified as a man - said the reform was a huge step forward.

"There have been very many cases of people being detained at airports by immigration in foreign countries simply because their passports don't reflect what they look like," she told Australian radio.

"It's very distressing(痛苦的) , highly inconvenient3 and frankly4 sometimes dangerous."
