G20 finance ministers are meeting for two days of talks in Paris. Largely focused on the eurozone debt crisis. Greece is still in spotlight1. But there are growing fears the crosses will spread to other indebted countries, such as Spain and Italy. They will be discussing how the International Monetary2 Fund can be beefed-up, so it can lend more money to struggling nations. Australia is represented at the meeting by Treasurer3 Wayne Swan.
It comes as
investors4 warn that Spain could be the next in line for a bailout package. Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's has cut Spain's long-term rating by one
notch5 to AA-. S&P says the country is struggling with weak growth and high levels of unemployment and private
sector6 debt.
Finch7 downgraded Spain by two
notches8 earlier this month, and Moody's is warning it, too, may follow suit.
Worries about European debt pushed down the local market. The All Ords and the ASX 200 losing about 1% yesterday. And across the region, the major Asian markets are tracking lower on signs China's economy has slowed. In the US, markets have ended the week on a positive note. The Dow gaining more than 1%. And the Aussie dollar is
hovering9 around 103 US cents.
