 Firefighters in Western Australia are hoping better weather conditions today will help them get a huge bushfire under control. Towns in the Margaret River region have been under threat and 30 properties have been destroyed or damaged. Further south, two separate fires have also been threatening the town of Denmark.

The Federal Government is denying a deal was done over the shock resignation of the House of Representatives Speaker Harry1 Jenkins. He’s been replaced by renegade Liberal Peter Slipper2, giving the Government an extra vote in the House. The Opposition3 is accusing the Government of doing a backroom deal to bolster4 its numbers. 
 
The Australian boy facing drug charges in Bali could be home by Christmas. The 14-year-old will be sentenced today. Prosecutors5 are pushing for a three-month sentence, but the judge could opt6 for a more lenient7 penalty. The teenager was arrested in October for allegedly buying a small amount of marijuana.  
 
Egypt's military rulers have apologised for the deaths of dozens of protesters. Thirty-nine people have died since the violence erupted on the weekend. Tens of thousands of people are maintaining their vigil on Cairo's Tahrir Square. The military has confirmed parliamentary elections will go ahead as planned next week.
