科技翻译和逻辑判断

 　　科技翻译不仅仅是个语言问题（词汇、语法、修辞等），它还牵涉到许多非语言方面的因素，逻辑便是其中最活跃、最重要的因素。苏联语言学家巴尔胡达罗夫曾举过这样一个例子：John is in the pen ，任何人也不会把句中的pen译为笔，而只能译为“牲口圈”，因为“人在钢笔里”是不合事理的。这说明在翻译中常常会碰到需要运用逻辑来判断和解决一些似乎不合逻辑的语言现象，这里说的逻辑判断，主要是指对原文语言思维逻辑的判断和译文的技术逻辑的判断。

　　例如：
　　1. Summary must be a condensed version of body of the report, written in language understandable by those members of mine management who may not be specialists in the field of rock testing, but who are nonetheless responsible for the work.
　　原译：摘要必须是报告的编写本，要以矿山管理部门人员能够理解的语言编写，这些人虽不是岩石试验方面的专家，但他们对这方面的工作负责。
　　分析：我们先来看一下原文的语言：两个“who-”定语从句，第一个可以看作表示原因的状语从句，第二个是非限制性定语从句，对先行词进行补充说明，but不是单纯的转折，而是和第一个从句中的not呼应，意思是“而是”或“只是”。由此，本句的意思已经比较明朗了：所以要以非专家的语言编写，是因为这些管理人员不是专家，而不是因为他们对这方面的工作负责。
　　现译为：摘要必须是报告的编写本，要以矿山管理部门人员能够理解的语言编写；他们虽然负责岩石试验工作，但不是这方面的专家。
　　2. The 20th century will not be remembered as the era when space was conquered, or the power of the atom, harnessed, but that in which were made the first machines having intelligence.
　　原译：将来人们回忆起20世纪的时候，不会把它看成是征服了太空和利用了原子动力的世纪，而是看成制造了首批具有智能的机器的世纪。
　　分析：对上面的译文进行逻辑判断时，首先看中文表达和所述事情在逻辑上是否有问题，我们感到有问题的是，究竟是把20世纪看作是什么样的世纪合适，是制造了首批智能机器的世纪，还是征服宇宙的世纪或原子能利用的世纪，我们常说：20世纪是征服宇宙的世纪，或者说，20世纪是原子能世纪，在发现译文不符合逻辑后，要注意研究原文语言。原句中的but= （unless）相当于表示否定意义的连词，含义是“如果不……”。其次，我们还要正确理解remember as ……这个补语的含义并恰当选择翻译表达形式。在翻译中常译为“把……叫做……”（称……为……）。此外，句中所说的the first machines， 通常是指electronic computers 而言。从技术逻辑上看，当今世界，如果没有具有智能的计算机一类机器，火箭就不能上天，原子能生产就无法控制。（即：A spacecraft cannot leave the earth and go to the moon without computers.）经过上述分析后，可提供如下译文：
　　如果在20世纪世不制造出具备智能的首批机器，我们就不会称为20世纪为征服宇宙的世纪或者称之为原子能利用的世纪。
　　上句也可采取“否定+否定=肯定”的翻译处理形式翻译：
　　只有在20世纪制造出了具有智能的首批机器，我们才会将20世纪称为征服宇宙的世纪或利用原子能的世纪。
　　可见，就科技英语而论，理解原文的过程，在多数情况下，是一个语义辩认，语法分析和逻辑分析三方面交互作用的过程，而不单单是一个逻辑分析的过程，请看下面的例句。
　　3. Shortly before the uninhabited space station reached orbit in May 1973，aerodynamic pressure ripped off a meteoroid and heat shield.
　　原译：在1973年5月无人空间站到达轨道前不久，空气动力压力扯破了一个流星体和挡热板。
　　分析：首先，从逻辑上看，说：“空气动力压力扯破了一个流星体”，是不合事理的，荒谬可笑的。其次，从语言上看，不定冠词a是说明shield的，而不是说明meteorlid的。否则，无法解释在名词shield 之前为何没有冠词。通过逻辑分析和语言分析可以清楚地看出，名词meteoroid和名词heat原来都是名词shield 的定语。A meteoroid and heat shield 的意思是：一个防流星体和防热的护罩。
　　综上所述，无论是理解原文的过程，还是寻求适当的汉语表达形式的过程，都是跟判断打交道的过程。科技英语因其专业特点及其相关背景知识，逻辑判断在我们进行译文处理时，显得尤其重要。语言具有民族的特点，而判断则具有全人类的性质。因此，掌握逻辑学里某些关于判断的知识，对于透彻理解原文，减少翻译错误，提高译文的质量，无疑是不少好处的。
