Egypt Interim Leaders Outlines Election Timetable

　　Senior officials of the Brotherhood Essam al-Erian says the plan for a vote early next year "brings the country back to square one."

 

　　In a bid to calm tensions in the country, Egypt's interim President has proposed new elections to be held by February.

 

　　Adli Mansour has also said an amendment³ would be made to the constitution with a panel to oversee⁴ this being formed within 15 days.

 

　　The changes would then be put to a referendum within 4-months before the new parliamentary elections.

 

　　The announcement comes amid violent clashes between the military and supporters of the ousted⁵ President Mohammed Morsi.

 

　　The Chinese Foreign Ministry⁶ is now calling on parties in Egypt to restore the rule of law as well as social stability.

 

　　The comments come as Egypt's Health Ministry confirmed that at least 51 people were killed yesterday outside the Republican Guard building.

 

　　There has been contradictory⁷ reports on who fired on whom.

 

　　The army says it was forced to step up its defenses after supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi began firing live ammunition⁸ at Egyptian soldiers.

 

　　But the Muslim Brotherhood says the army raided a peaceful sit-in of protesters.
