With that condition sweeping1 the nation, Powerballfever’s spreading tonight. Millions of Americans and the dream, and now a recordPowerball Jackpot. In California tonight, thisis their first Powerball helping2 you explain the line like this one in Hawthorne, Los Angeles. Tonight’s Jackpot is now estimated 600million dollars, and the odds3 of winning, 1 in 175.2 million. And at this pointbecause so many Americans have bought tickets, 80% of all possible combinationshave already been chosen. ABC's John Schriffen on the finger's cross, in homesacross America tonight andright here in the studio, Johnson California.
This is the sound heard around the country tonight. Powerball tickets speedingout as fast as possible for the record 600 million dollar Jackpot.
“What' your strategy?”
“I'm interested in the quick pick, and I did some birthdays, a few prayers.”
“Here in Hawthorne in California Bluebird Liquor isconsidered the luckiest store in the entire state, crowning 6 differentmillionaires. That's why you can see here behind me, the line for powerballtickets stretches all the way down the block.
How long have you been waiting on this line?”
“I would say at least about an hour and a half, but it feels like forever.”
“I hope so.”
With all the excitement comes plenty of securities. Here inside the fort inFlorida where the number will be
drawn5 tonight, officials are taking no chances, making sure the
lottery6 scandal of 1980 when the balls were weighted with leadpaint so that they would fall on a specific order doesn't happen again. Butif no one wins tonight, the next Jackpot will be close to a billion dollars, leavinglottery officials without
minor7 issue.
We know that's really a problem for us because most of the signs out there goto 999.If that does happen, Bluebird Liquor here says it will happily handwritea sign for a billion dollars. And that is possible. Lottery officials say only20% of the possible combinations still have not been purchased.
