The National Library holds exhibition to recapture Yan'an memories

　　The National Library in Beijing is holding an exhibition of scripts of plays produced during the revolutionary period in Yan'an. These scripts open a window into the life of that era.

　　Zhao Jiemin is singing a piece created in the 1940s during the revolutionary period. It's only one of many memorable¹ works that emerged in the prolific² period.

　　Zhao Jiemin, a researcher of The National Library says, "Many new works of various genres³ emerged at that time, like folk dancing, opera and allegro⁴ drama."

　　The exhibition showcases over 150 manuscripts and publications. All of which were inspired by Mao Zedong's speech expressing a view foundational to later artists.

　　Meng Yu-- then aged⁵ 19 , was there when the famous talks took place. Although she's now 90, the memories are still vivid.

　　Meng Yu says, "The first thing he said was that art should serve the people and also the workers, peasants and the military."

　　And it's exactly what the artists did.

　　The opera "The White Haired Girl".

　　"One of our dramas made such a big impact on the military that we later got a letter thanking us for boosting the troops’ morale⁶ in battle."

　　While arts have evolved since then, people still look back to the Yan'an period as a unique time in the history of Chinese art.

　　"The Eulogy⁷ of Yan'an" storms the stage

　　In the city of Yan'an, the heart of Mao's speech, performances such as "The Eulogy of Yan'an" and "I Want To Go to Yan'an" have stormed the stage.
